Student Tax Information (2023 Calendar Year)

Summary

Trinity Western University issues tax forms to students for income tax purposes. These forms are your records of eligible tuition & fees paid during the calendar year and any financial awards income received from the University during calendar year.

**Please note the following Full time thresholds for student tax receipting purposes:

Undergraduate - student is enrolled in 9 credit hours or greater per semester
Graduate - all students enrolled in a Graduate, Seminary or Doctoral Program are considered to be Full Time

How to Obtain Your Tax Forms ↓

T2202 and T4A - For Canadian, US and International students, forms will be available on the student portal by February 29, 2024.

Please note: If you didn't take any classes in 2023, you won't get a tax receipt for 2023. Any deposits made to the university are not recorded on this form.

If you have provided your SIN after your tax forms have already been made available to you, you will have to wait up to one business day to see the updated information reflected on your tax forms.

1098T - For students with US citizenship, if your address on your student profile is within North America, the US 1098T tuition form was mailed out on January 22, 2024. For those with an international or campus address, you will receive an email requesting you to drop by the HUB to pick up the form or provide a North American mailing address.

An Explanation of Different Types of Tax Forms ↓

T2202 (all students) - The T2202 reports all eligible tuition and fees paid and the number of months a student is enrolled in a qualifying education program. It does not provide assurance that the student is eligible for related tuition credits or a scholarship income exemption.

T4A (all students) - The T4A reports all financial awards received, such as scholarships / bursaries / awards / grants (e.g., Provost award, Torch award, experiential learning grants).

1098T (U.S. Students only) – Reports both eligible tuition & fees paid as well as financial awards.

How Tax Forms at TWU Are Prepared ↓

TWU prepares tax forms on a comprehensive / gross basis. This means that all transactions are reported without regard to an individual student’s circumstance as to whether they are eligible to use any/all of the tuition credits reported. Comprehensive transactions are also reported on the T4A without regard as to applicability of inclusion/exclusion of that income for an individual’s tax filing purposes according to their individual circumstances.

SIN / SSN – Governmental taxation authorities require students to provide their SIN / SSN number to educational institutions for the issuance of tax receipts. You can update your SIN number on your student profile by clicking HERE.

If you have provided your SIN after your tax forms have been issued, please request an updated tax form HERE.

Application fees – Application fees may be eligible for a tax credit but have not been reported on your T2202 since it is normally paid before you have a student account established. Maintain your receipt or proof of payment if you are eligible to claim this fee.

Important Note: These tax forms, and the amounts reported on them, do not provide assurance that the student is eligible to claim any amounts reported on the receipt, for personal tax filing or other purposes. Each student is responsible for determining their own eligibility to claim credits and to report applicable income, based on their own circumstances. If guidance is necessary for your income tax filing regarding what amounts from your tax form can be used, please contact a qualified accountant / tax preparer accordingly.
