How Do I Apply For Health Coverage While In Canada?

Medical Insurance (MSP + Interim Health Insurance)

It is required by law to register for your Medical Services Plan (MSP)

It is your responsibility to sign up for medical insurance. Please follow the instructions below:

Step 1: Sign up for MSP (this process takes 3 months to activate)

Step 2: Purchase interim insurance while you wait for your MSP to be processed. (It is highly recommended to be covered by insurance while you wait for your MSP to be activated)

Click "apply for insurance" 

Pick "student" and insert your student number and birth date

On the next page, you will see coverage dates (you should purchase insurance for 3 months while MSP is being processed) 

For example: January 8, 2021– April 7, 2021 covers exactly 3 months

1. Can I just purchase Guard.Me for the whole year and not purchase MSP?

You must be covered by MSP as an international student. It is advised to apply for interim insurance for 90 days

 

2. What is the difference between Guard.Me and MSP?

Guard.Me is a private health coverage meant to bridge the gap for international students who have a 90 day waiting period before being eligible for MSP

 

3. How will I receive my policy number and electronic ID once I made a purchase?

The policy number and electronic ID will be emailed to the student within 24 hours of confirmation. If it is not in the inbox, please check the junk mailbox

 

4. If I need to see a doctor, how do I get coverage or make a claim?

Please keep all original receipts and submit a claim online through your online account. You can find clinics posted online that have access to Guard.Me direct billing.
