Photocopier Toner Safe Handling Procedures

Tags Safety

Overview

Toner cartridges have come a long way over the years to the point now where the toxicity is extremely low when they are used and handled as intended.

Specific Hazards

As toner is made up of a very fine dust, it is susceptible to "Dust Explosion".  As such, ensure that you avoid any type of fire or spark when dealing with a toner spill.

Safe Handling

In case of a toner spill: Wipe off with paper or cloth.  Do not use a vacuum cleaner when a large amount is released.  Feel free to contact IT for assistance.

Personal Protective Equipment:  Use of a dust mask, gloves, and goggles are recommended when handling a large quantity of toner or during long term exposure.

First-Aid Measures

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air.  If symptoms occur, consult medical personnel.

Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water for 15 minutes or until particle is removed.  If irritation does occur, consult medical personnel.

Eye Contact: flush eyes immediately with water for 15 minutes.  If irritation does occur, consult medical personnel.

Ingestion: Rinse with water and drink several glasses of water.  If irritation or discomfort does occur, consult medical personnel.
