Connecting to a TWU Computer Using Remote Desktop Connection

*This is only available for people who require the use of their on campus desktop due to the special software requirements or specific network shares that are exclusively available from a TWU-issued machine and the TWU_Staff network. For basic work functions such as email, internet access, etc, please do not use this service.

Mac Computers

To access your work desktop computer from a personal Mac machine using the Remote Desktop Connection feature, please note the following then follow the steps below:

-Ensure your TWU-issued desktop is turned on. It must be on for this to work
-Turn off your monitors connected to your desktop. This is to prevent anyone from seeing the work you are doing if they are in the office.
-Note the name of your TWU-issued computer on the sticker on the machine.

1. Submit a ticket to IT (twu.ca/help) requesting Remote Desktop Connection access and providing the name of your computer. Once we respond you can proceed to Step 2.
We can also locate the name of your TWU-issued computer if needed.

2. Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 tool from the Mac App Store here: https://apps.apple.com/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id1295203466?mt=12

3. Open the application by clicking through the grey "Launchpad" icon on your Dock and clicking on the Remote Desktop app icon. Or, you can use the searchlight feature by clicking the looking glass at the top right of your home screen, or by using the shortcut Command + Space Bar, and searching for "Microsoft Remote Desktop." Opening the app should look like this. Select the + drop down and select Add PC

Note: If you think you'll be frequently using this remote desktop connection, now would be a good time to set it in your dock. Right click (control + click) on the icon, mouse over "Options," and click "Keep in Dock." This will keep you from having to look for the icon every time you need to use it.

4. Your PC name is the name you collected or we provided in Step 1. Enter your computer name in the PC name text box, but add .twu.ca to the end. Ex: FIN43821d.twu.ca
The Friendly name is just a name to give the connection, but is optional (Ex: Work Computer). Select the No gateway drop down and select Add Gateway.

5. Add gateway settings as seen below. Press Add when done.

6.Ensure Gateway now has the "Friendly name" you chose above in the "Gateway:" drop down. If not, select the drop down and select the name you gave the gateway. Finally, press Add.

7. You are now ready to connect to your work desktop computer! You should see the friendly name you gave your computer earlier in the window. Click on this to launch the Login Window.

8. Enter your full @twu.ca credentials. Please note that you may receive a pop up indicating that you need to trust this connection. This is safe to agree to and proceed with.

9. When you are done working on your remote desktop, do not shut the computer down. You are able to log off or lock the computer, but shutting down will prevent you from reconnecting until it is turned on again. To reconnect, simply launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 and select your computer name, followed by entering your credentials.
